What do we do?
You know how difficult recycling scrap metal is because you're never sure you're getting a fair deal? We've been working to change that since 1949. In fact, we've helped over 20,000 people and businesses recycle their scrap metal with fast and friendly service as Dothan's first and longest lasting scrap yard.
We buy scrap metal from the public and industrial businesses, sorting, preparing, and shipping it to be made into new material again. We work at both ends of the supply chain, collecting metal goods that have reached the end of their product's life or would be waste material from the manufacturing process, and bring it back as a raw material at the top of the chain again. The process is a little different for individuals compared to businesses.
Individual scrappers
We buy all material by the weight. When you scrap with us, you'll either use our truck scales for large loads or our pallet scales for smaller loads and nonferrous (copper, aluminum, etc). Before you get to either scale, you can stop at the office, get directions, and have your scrap graded so you know what you'll be paid before anything is unloaded. With either scale, you'll see the weight prominently displayed, and our crew will unload you quickly so you can get paid and get back to the rest of your day.
♻️Friendly staff. You'll never have to unload your own material here. Let us do the heavy lifting.
♻️Fast service. According to Google's data on customer visit lengths, we were 25% faster than the competition in 2022. On average, you can get in, get unloaded, and get paid in 20 minutes.
♻️Transparent transactions. Everything is done in the open. We want to make sure you know how much your material is worth before you're unloaded, your weights are prominently displayed for you to see, and your material is itemized on your receipt.
♻️Cash in hand. We pay cash when we're able. Alabama law limits most scrap metal transactions to $500 ($50 for copper), and anything above this is payable by check while you're here. We do not have mandatory holding periods, are not required to mail a check.
Anyone over 18 and who has a US-issued photo ID (driver license, etc) can scrap with us. We buy steel, copper, aluminum, brass, lead, and stainless steel. We don't buy hazardous materials or catalytic converters separate from the whole vehicle. Each type of metal has its own grades of scrap and we're here to answer any of your questions on how to separate different grades of material and what the current prices are. We give tips on the different grades in our newsletter as well as general industry and market news where you can learn more. We haven't posted our prices online yet but are more than happy to help you if you call us or dm us through our Contact Us page, Facebook page, or our Google business profile.
We are open Monday - Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. We are closed on Saturday and Sunday.
Industrial clients
Your business can deliver material to our facility, or we offer a container service for heavier grades of metal in a 25-mile radius. For details on our container service, please call us at 334-794-4251.
Our scales are audited and calibrated annually by an independent company. We have weighmasters on site, responsible for daily inspections and overseeing the operations to make sure everything is bought honestly and properly. Your weights are displayed beside the scale, and pictures are taken of all material being bought. Most transactions are paid by check, but we offer cash payments on request. Alabama law does not regulate an upper limit to cash payments made to businesses. Please notify us before sending the driver if he or she is allowed to receive payment for the material, if it should be held for pickup, or mailed.
👷♂️Containers on site. We offer roll-off container services for heavier materials to better service your facility and keep the workflow going.
👷♂️Honesty and integrity. An independent company audits our scales annually. All material you send to us is recorded digitally and available for review.
👷♂️Direct contact. As a family-owned scrap yard, the Emfinger family lives here and works here. Every day.
👷♂️Timely payments. If you send a driver with your materials, he or she can leave with payment in hand (with your approval!). Container clients are paid monthly for the material shipped in the previous month.

Our story
Dewey E. Emfinger started Emfinger Steel in 1949 in downtown Dothan with a wheelbarrow and $20 in borrowed cash, finding his passion in buying scrap metal from individuals and selling in bulk to steel mills. He quickly became too big for the location downtown and found Emfinger Steel's current home on Webb Rd. His son and grandson, Sam Emfinger Sr. and Sam Emfinger Jr., would both grow up on the yard and in the business of scrap metal, learning first-hand the work and care that goes into providing the best scrap metal recycling experience in the Wiregrass. Dewey Emfinger passed in 2003 and his son Sam Emfinger Sr has been running the business as President since then with his son Sam Emfinger Jr.
